It is not worn on its own: by itself it is not a protective garment. It replaces the veil of a suit or jacket you already own.

01 · THE ZIP DECIDES

Another fencing veil is not proof it will fit

This is what goes wrong most often in this purchase, so it comes first. A suit having a fencing veil is no guarantee that this one will fit: what has to match is the zip. Before ordering, compare the two halves — type and size of the teeth or coil, length of the run, starting point, closing direction and the shape of the stops. A small difference can stop the perimeter closing or, worse, leave a gap at the neck.

02 · IT IS NOT THE ROUND-VEIL ONE

They are two different systems and do not swap

It gets asked a lot and the answer is no. This is the fencing veil: a rigid visor hanging from the shoulders. A suit with a round veil — the hat-and-net kind — takes a different replacement with a different attachment: the garment is cut for one or the other.

03 · THE TEST, BEFORE THE APIARY

Fit it at home and turn your head

With the veil fitted and the zip closed all the way, turn your head both ways while looking down: the mesh must not touch face or neck. Check the seams, the mesh, the slider and the join with the garment. A half-closed zip cancels out the whole thing, and that is better discovered at home than in front of a hive.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

For washing and storage the garment’s own label governs. Do not crush the visor structure and let it dry completely: a mesh put away damp and folded is the one that comes out deformed next season.
