01 · WHERE THE PATTERN COMES FROM

Rolled on comb foundation

They are made by rolling a sheet of stamped beeswax foundation by hand — the same sheet that goes into the frames for the bees to build on — around the wick. Hence the hexagons over the whole surface, and hence no two being exactly alike.

It is a candle that smells of what it is made of: honey and hive, with no perfume added. If you are after vanilla or lavender, this is not it.

02 · HOW IT BURNS

Slowly, because of the melting point

Beeswax melts at around 62-65 °C, well above paraffin, and that is what makes a candle like this burn down slowly and hold its four hours. Molten beeswax is also more viscous, so it drips less and the candle keeps its shape upright.

Four hours is a reference, not a guarantee: a draught shortens the life of any candle and makes the rim burn unevenly.

03 · GETTING THE BEST FROM THEM

Four small habits

Trim the wick to 5-7 mm before lighting: a long wick makes a tall flame and smoke. Put them in a firm holder — 2 cm socket — and away from draughts.

Let them form a small pool of wax before moving them, and do not leave them burning unattended. Store them upright and out of the sun: beeswax softens with heat, and a candle left lying flat in summer bends.

04 · THE PACK

Twelve candles and some 300 g of wax

The pack holds 12 units of around 25 grams each — some 300 grams of wax in all. Enough for a season of dinners, or for a gift batch split across several boxes.

Over time they may take on a whitish film: that is the natural bloom of the wax, not mould and not a fault. It comes off with a soft cloth or the warmth of your hand.
