TO 53 FINISH · GPI 2020 | 30 LIDS PER PACK |
A 53 mm gold twist-off lid, pack of 30: the finish of the 106 ml jar, the tasting and gift-lot format.
Four lugs on 0.15 mm tinplate, with a food-grade sealing compound.
01 · COMPATIBILITY
It closes the 106 ml Orcio jar and the 106 ml hexagonal jar, the two containers with a 53 finish in the catalogue. Check the pack before ordering: lids come in thirties, the same as the Orcio, so that matches exactly; but the hexagonal is sold in packs of 32, so one pack of lids leaves two jars uncovered. For two packs of hexagonal jars, three of lids.
02 · WHAT THE COLOUR CHANGES
Gold is outer lacquer over the same tinplate: it changes neither the seal, nor the sealing compound, nor the thermal limit. Gold, silver and black lids of the same finish share one specification sheet, so you can alternate colours within a single filling run without changing anything in the process. What does change is the shelf: on a small jar, gold is the classic honey-jar finish and adds gloss to the whole, whereas matt black takes it away and lets the label lead.
03 · THE RIM OF THE JAR
The small format is filled almost to the top and the rim gets dirty in no time. And the rim is exactly where the compound has to gasket: a film of honey between glass and lid stops it seating and ends in a weeping jar, a sticky label and a marked box. Wipe the rim clean before capping — a large jar forgives it, a 106 ml one does not. And keep the lids in their bag: with metal this light, one dent in the skirt and it no longer seals.
FROM THE APIARY
A Twist-Off does not screw on like a bottle cap: the four lugs ride up a short ramp and the whole closure is a quarter turn. Sit it flat until you feel it settle, turn to the stop and leave it there: carrying on does not seal better, it bends the lug and leaves the jar impossible to open. If it grates or feels like the thread has stripped, lift it off and set it down again — there is no thread to strip, a lug has ridden over its ramp.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
This is the finish of tasting jars and gift lots, not of the everyday retail jar: for that, look at TO 63 and TO 77. For production runs, the same lid comes in a full box of 1,850.
| ✓ FITS | 106 ml Orcio jar and 106 ml hexagonal jar, both TO 53. |
| ✕ DOES NOT FIT | Any other finish: the diameter has to be 53, the neighbouring size will not do. |
