METHOD

3 days

FROM LAYING TO LARVA

3 parts

PER QUEEN CELL

Jenter system kit for rearing queens without grafting: a laying cassette of 112 cells and the parts to build the queen cells on the cell bar.

Classic rearing means lifting every larva out of its worker cell with a grafting needle and setting it into a cup, a delicate move that takes hours of bench time to learn. Jenter reverses the order: the queen lays inside the very cell that later becomes the queen cell, and the larva is neither touched nor turned over.

01 · THE METHOD

You move the cell, not the larva

The cell plugs are seated in the 112 holes of the plate and capped so the bees cannot fill them with honey or pollen. The queen is confined behind the excluder cover, within a few hours she lays inside each plug, and the next day she is released. Some three days later the larva has hatched inside its plug: the tool in the box lifts the whole plug out and pushes it into a cell cup.

02 · THE PARTS

Type A and type B are not two grades of one part

Every queen cell is built from three different parts in sequence. The cell plug is the narrow dark brown piece seated in the plate: that is where the queen lays and where the larva hatches. The cell cup is the amber piece, wider and shorter, into which that plug is pushed to form the queen cell. And the yellow cup holder fixes the assembly to the cell bar.

03 · MOUNTING IT

The cassette is not a frame ready to hang

The cassette is let into an already drawn comb, inside a frame the beekeeper provides: neither frame nor comb nor foundation is in the box. Leave it a few days in the middle of the brood nest so the bees clean and polish it: on plastic straight out of the bag the queen is reluctant to lay and the first round comes out short.

04 · A CLOSED SYSTEM

No part interchanges with Nicot

Jenter and Nicot solve the same problem in their own way and their parts do not fit one another: plugs, cups and holders from one system will not serve in the other, and the spares are sold in separate lines. Mixing them ends with the larva moved by hand from the Jenter plate into a Nicot cup, exactly the move this kit was meant to save.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

This is the original Karl Jenter kit, and we are their official distributor for Europe. Three things to settle first. The cassette needs a frame with drawn comb and neither is included, so you either prepare one or sacrifice one from the hive. The learning DVD is in German only: it works as a visual reference, but there is no English version or any other. And because this is a closed system, spares are always ordered as Jenter, never as Nicot.

✓ GOOD FITBeekeepers who want to raise batches of queens without handling a grafting needle and have a frame of drawn comb to spare.
✕ NOT A FITAnyone running Cupularve or Nicot cups looking for compatible spares, or expecting a frame already assembled and ready to hang.
