No patch of comb has to be given up

The practical difference from a protector pressed into the comb is where the part ends up. Hung between frames, it takes up no comb surface, does not force you to find an area of empty cells, and can be moved — to another frame or another hive — by simply unhooking it. That makes it convenient when preparing several units at once and repeating the same action in series rather than improvising a set-up on each frame. The trade-off is that of any suspended part: make sure it hangs firmly and does not get in the way when the hive is closed.

They all protect; what changes is where they grip

Queen-protection pieces all do the same job — isolating the queen or the cell while the colony makes up its mind — and differ in how they are held. Choosing well means deciding first where you want her to sit:

Worth saying without decoration, because this is where batches are lost: none of these pieces makes the colony accept the queen. What they do is stop her being killed while it decides. Acceptance depends on other things — the colony being genuinely queenless, the age and condition of the queen, enough nurse bees, and where you are in the brood calendar. And the sign that it has happened is not the clock, it is behaviour: while the workers cling to the mesh aggressively it is not the moment; when they feed her normally, it is.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It measures 32 × 38 × 18 mm and is sold singly; count one per cell or queen you will handle, plus a spare or two, as these are small and easy to lose. Before ordering quantity, check it fits the rest of your JZ's BZ's equipment: it is a system of parts that work together, and it is worth confirming the set before buying fifty.
