Slow-release pheromone gel: hang it, forget it, and collect swarms for up to 4 months
Swarm season and the same old story: half your swarms end up in the top of an oak or on your neighbour's roof. The ANEL Allure Stick works for you while you're busy inspecting hives. Each stick contains a high-concentration pheromone gel that mimics the queen's signal, attracting swarms within a radius of up to 25 metres for up to 4 months with no reapplication needed. According to the manufacturer's data, it captures 55 % of prime swarms and up to 81 % of cast swarms — where the bees tend to settle permanently in the trap.
Poke 4–6 small holes in the aluminium sleeve, drill a hole at the top and hang it from a branch, inside a bait hive or on any support at roughly 1.80 m height. The gel releases gradually, keeping pheromone emission active for up to 4 months without any further attention. In the thick of the season — when you're juggling inspections, supering and queen checks — that's real time saved.
Cast swarms (afterswarms) are smaller, harder to spot and the ones most likely to fly off and be lost for good. This is where the Allure Stick really earns its keep: with an 81 % attraction rate, most of those casts walk straight into your trap — and crucially, they settle permanently, so there's no rush to hive them. If you're managing colonies that tend to throw multiple swarms in quick succession, this changes the equation.
With 20 sticks per tub, you can cover multiple strategic points across your apiary or spread them between out-apiaries. Each stick covers a 25-metre radius, so with smart placement you can set up a capture grid around your entire bee yard. They also work inside nuc-style bait hives or even empty brood boxes with a couple of drawn combs — scouts go in to investigate and the swarm follows.
The attractant works on swarms that pass within its range — it won't pull a swarm from 500 metres away. Use it as part of a solid trapping strategy: well-sited bait hives, some old dark comb on the frames and, if you can, a smear of propolis around the entrance. It's the combination that really maximises your catch rate. Also, in hot climates evaporation may be faster, so in areas with intense summers it's worth checking periodically that the stick is still giving off scent.
