A full hive weighs more than 50 kg, and you still weigh it with a 50 kg scale: because you do not lift the whole thing.

Digital hook scale up to 50 kg, with a lit display, tare and a folding metal handle. It measures 11 × 6 × 2 cm and carries its two AAA batteries.

01 · HOW A HIVE IS WEIGHED

You lift one side, not the lot

The method is to lift one side slightly, hooking under the lip of the floor. That figure is not the weight of the hive, it is half of it — and that is the point: what you need is not the absolute weight but to compare the hive with itself week after week. Whether it needs feeding is told by the slope: how many kilos it loses in a month.

Always hook at the same point and lift slowly: a sharp pull inflates the reading. The steel tool for that lifting point is sold separately.

02 · THE TWO RANGES

5 g below, 10 g above

It weighs up to 10 kg in 5 g steps and from 10 to 50 kg in 10 g steps. The display lights up and the tare takes off the tool or the bucket. Away from the apiary it will weigh anything.

03 · WHAT IT IS NOT

A hive scale

It is a simple, cheap hook scale for spot checks. It is not a fixed monitoring scale: the daily weight curve without setting foot in the apiary comes from platform scales with logging.
