Details of Polyester strap for hives 4.5 m x 16 mm with galvanised metal ratchet

Ratchet lashing strap, 4.5 m long and 16 mm wide, in polyester with a galvanised metal ratchet and quick-release lever, to lock a whole hive together before moving it.

It is a lashing strap, not a lifting sling. It keeps the stack from opening or shifting; what you do not do with it is hang the hive from a hook.

01 · WHAT IT IS FOR

Holding the stack: floor, brood box, supers and roof

The ratchet tightens enough for floor, brood box, supers and roof to travel as one piece, without the shifts that crush bees at every pothole.

Outside migratory work there are two more uses: anchoring against wind and keeping stacked equipment together in the shed.

02 · THE 4.5 METRES

Plenty for the vertical loop of a hive

The vertical loop of a two-box Langstroth is about 2.4 metres: 4.5 m leaves room for a long Layens or to pass under a pallet.

At 16 mm you tension it one-handed, which is what you appreciate with twenty hives to strap in the dark.

03 · WHAT IT DOES NOT DO

Lashing and lifting are two different things

Lashing straps are marked for restraining a load against the platform, not for holding it in the air. Lifting slings are another family and another standard.

And each season, hold the webbing up to the light: a cut on the edge is reason to retire it.
