Details of Support to lift with a hook scale

Stainless-steel tool for linking a hook scale or spring balance to a suitable hive grip and repeating weight checks.

It seats under a rebated floor or in a recessed handhold so one side can be lifted slightly. This is a lifting adaptor, not a scale and not a direct reading of the hive’s total weight.

A positive grip is essential: a smooth wall or floor gives the tool nothing to retain it and it may slip. Test the geometry with the hive unloaded before applying force.

01 · COMPATIBILITY

It needs a firm ledge, recess or handhold

The support end must engage fully under the floor or inside a strong recessed grip. Remove propolis or wax that prevents proper seating and reject sloping, rounded or weak surfaces. The tool must reach the chosen point without the hand, scale or hook rubbing against the hive.

02 · MEASURING METHOD

Repeat the same side and position every time

Connect a suitable hook scale, lift only enough to unload that support and record the reading. To compare stores or consumption, use the same point, side, angle and conditions on each visit. A one-sided value is a partial lifting force: do not label it as total hive weight unless your method has been calibrated for that hive.

03 · READING THE TREND

Changes over time are more useful than one isolated number

Record date, side and reading to follow relative increases or falls. Moisture, slope, hive material, supers, bee population and store distribution all influence the result. For an exact inventory or a critical feeding decision, combine the trend with inspection and an appropriate weighing system.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Check the gripping point and add the correct scale

Only the stainless-steel lifting tool is supplied. Hook scale, spring balance and accessories are not included. It is unsuitable for a hive with no bottom ledge or recess that can retain it; if the tool cannot seat positively, do not force it or stand in its possible slip path.
