5m hive strap, galvanized iron, 5mm core, 600g. Secure and durable fastening.
On a trailer it is not the braking that breaks a hive: it is the hundred kilometres of vibration that shift it, little by little.
Five-metre lashing strap with a galvanised metal comb buckle. The strap is textile and the buckle is the metal part: you thread the strap through the teeth, pull, and it locks itself.
01 · HOW TO TENSION IT
The strap goes through the buckle's teeth and is pulled tight by hand; the teeth stop it slipping, with no ratchet and nothing to lose. The buckle goes on a side of the hive, never top or bottom: that way you can reach it without dismantling anything and it does not rub on the next box.
And the move that makes the difference: re-tension after the first few kilometres. The load settles, the timber gives a little, and what left tight arrives loose. A short stop to check the straps is worth more than everything else.
02 · LASHING IS NOT CLOSING
Five metres goes right round floor, brood box, super and roof, which is the point: the stack travels as one piece. But a hive lashed down with its entrance shut still needs air: with no ventilation on top, on a trailer in the sun the cluster heats up within minutes.
Outside transport it works just the same: holding the roof down when the wind gets up.
