IN DIAGNOSTIC MODE

Flumethrin strips from Elanco, registered for two different jobs: diagnosing varroa and treating it.

It is the only one in the catalogue whose indication includesdiagnosis: the same strips that treat for six weeks will, left in for 24 hours, measure a hive's mite load. The bag holds4 strips, the treatment for one hive of normal development.

01 · DIAGNOSIS IN 24 HOURS

A clean sheet of paper and a day's wait

The sheet's protocol is simple: youcover the floor with a clean sheet of paper, insert the strips and24 hours later you count the fallen varroa. It puts a number on what until then is a suspicion, and it is the step the sheet asks for on an ongoing basis — watch the mite load through the year, with a sticky board for the natural drop or by counting mitesper 100 bees.

02 · HOW MANY STRIPS AND WHERE

The dose changes with colony size

There is no single figure here. Anormally developed colony takes 4 strips; innucs, new colonies and freshly hived swarms, half that: 2; and in large colonies with several brood areas,4 per area, spread through the central gangways of each one. They hang in the central part of the brood nest, between the combs, so the bees can settle on both faces: fold the tabs along the marked lines and hang them from the top bar. A trick from the sheet itself for large colonies —joining two strips at their lower end lets you put them in and take them out without pulling the brood combs apart.

03 · ROTATION

Alternating Bayvarol with Apistan is not rotating

Flumethrin is apyrethroid, and its sheet says so without hedging: since flumethrin and tau-fluvalinate belong to the same chemical class, they are not suitable for rotating with each other. Anyone alternating Bayvarol and Apistan thinks they are rotating and has been repeating the same family for years. Useful rotation is withdifferent classes, within an integrated programme with systematic monitoring. If there isknown pyrethroid resistance, it is not applied. And one nuance that gives you room: if it was observed years ago, the sheet advises retesting, becausesusceptibility can return over time.

04 · HONEY, POLLEN AND WAX

The long restriction is not the honey one

On honey, the withdrawal iszero days. But the very same section adds something far more restrictive that almost nobody publishes:the other hive products —pollen, wax, propolis— must not be intended for human consumption until the spring following treatment. If you harvest pollen or sell wax, that deadline governs your calendar. The best efficacy comesin late summer, after the harvest, and ideally you do not use it in full honey flow; even so, the sheet allows itat any time of year for diagnosis or faced with a severe infestation. The strips stay infor a maximum of six weeks.

⚠ PRECAUTIONS

Do not open the bagsuntil the moment you use them, and keep the strips from touching honey intended for human consumption. Wash your hands after handling them, before eating and at the end of the job; do not eat, drink or smoke while you work with them. Treatevery colony in the apiary at the same time. Used strips do not go into watercourses: flumethrin is dangerous to fish.

05 · SUPPLY AND PACK

Bayvarol is aprescription-only veterinary medicine and is administered under veterinary supervision or control. Because of that status itcannot be supplied by distance selling: this page is informational and does not process any purchase. The aluminium bag holds4 strips, the treatment for one normally developed hive. The marketing authorisation holder is Elanco Animal Health.

✓ FITSNormal colonies, nucs and swarms, each with its own dose. Also for diagnosing the varroa load.
✕ DOESN'T FITColonies with known pyrethroid resistance, and as a relay from Apistan: they are the same chemical class. Flumethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid, not allowed in organic production.
⚠ NOTEIf you harvestpollen, wax or propolis, you will not be able to intend them for human consumptionuntil the following spring. And once the bag is open, the strips last 6 weeks.

Do you have any questions about Bayvarol Elanco varroa (1 hive)?

How long should Bayvarol strips stay inside the hive?

A maximum of six weeks, after which they are removed. That is the limit the technical sheet sets for treatment.

Diagnostic use is different: there the strips go in for just 24 hours. You first cover the hive floor with a clean sheet of paper and, after that day, count the fallen varroa to estimate the colony's mite load.

Can I harvest honey and other hive products after treating with Bayvarol?

For honey the withdrawal period is zero days. But the technical sheet adds, in that very same section, a far longer restriction that is almost never published: the other hive products —pollen, wax and propolis— must not be intended for human consumption until the spring following treatment.

You should also keep the strips from coming into contact with honey intended for human consumption. If you harvest pollen or sell wax, that deadline governs your calendar more than the honey one does.
