The BroodMinder-W is an advanced hive scale designed to continuously monitor hive weight, helping you track productivity, nectar flow, and reserve consumption throughout the beekeeping cycle. This scale is an essential tool for monitoring nectar flow intensity, managing winter reserves, tracking spring growth, and identifying key events such as swarming or robbing. Installed in just one minute and operational year-round, the BroodMinder-W is ideal for both hobbyists and professional beekeepers who seek greater control over their hives.

Details of BroodMinder-W Wooden Hive Scale

A single bar under one side of the hive, a weight reading every hour and five grams of resolution: the colony's daily pulse without opening it.

This is a half-hive scale. The bar carries one side; the other keeps resting on your hive stand. The sensor weighs that half and doubles it to give you the total. Worth knowing from the start: it changes how it is installed and how the number is read.

01 · IT WEIGHS HALF AND DOUBLES

The total is an estimate; the curve is the data

By doubling the reading, the scale assumes the weight is shared evenly between front and back. It almost never is, entirely: the balance of the hive, the wedge and where the cluster sits shift that sum a little.

That is not a flaw, it is how these scales are used. A beekeeper does not need to know the hive weighs 62.4 kg, but that it weighed two kilos less yesterday. The variations, which are what you actually read, are reliable even when the total is approximate.

02 · THE 4 CM WEDGE

Installing it takes two pieces, not one

The bar slides under one side of the hive, preferably the rear: less sun and less handling. On the opposite side you have to place a 4 cm wooden wedge to make up for the height of the scale. Without it the hive sits tilted and the weight distribution drifts.

Check that the hive ends up level and resting on its whole surface. Set up like that it stays all year, with nothing more to adjust.

03 · WHAT THE CURVE TELLS YOU

Flow, swarm, winter and foraging on one graph

A steady rise of one or two kilos a day is a nectar flow coming in: time to add a super before it fills. A sharp drop in the middle of a spring day is a swarm that has left. A slow decline in winter is the stores being eaten, and its slope tells you whether they reach February or need feeding.

With hourly readings you also see the daily pulse: the weight drops at dawn as the foragers leave and rises as they return. And a hive whose weight stops moving and merely follows the outside temperature is a hive with no bees left in it.

04 · WHICH OF THE THREE SCALES

Half hive, whole hive or migratory beekeeping

There are three BroodMinder scales in the catalogue and two questions choose between them. Fixed apiary or migratory? If you move your hives, the W4 is the only one meant to stay in place during transport: two aluminium bars, whole hive, no wedge and no doubling.

If the apiary is fixed, this W and the W5 are the two half-hive scales and share the same 5 gram resolution. What changes is the build, white oak on an aluminium base here against all metal on the W5, and the headroom: 181 kg of total hive weight against 400 kg.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

What is in the box and what you have to provide yourself.

✓ INCLUDEDThe scale, its weatherproof and UV resistant cover, two AAA lithium batteries and free access to the BroodMinder Bees app and MyBroodMinder.com.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDThe 4 cm wedge for the opposite side, which you make yourself, and the hive floor.
✕ NO HUB, NO REMOTEOn its own it stores the readings and you download them over Bluetooth while standing there. To see the weight from home you need a BroodMinder hub and its subscription.

This scale has been a BroodMinder classic since 2017 and remains a benchmark in hobby beekeeping. Over time, we have improved it to make it more accurate and reliable.

It is ideal for stationary apiaries, where you can ensure the hive is well-leveled. If you practice migratory beekeeping, I recommend the W4 model, designed to adapt to any terrain.
