01 · WHY THE GAP MATTERS

Mesh does not protect because it is mesh, but because it stands off

A screen does not stop a sting: what stops it is the air between the mesh and the skin. That is what the square hat is for — the structure holds the front clear of the nose and the lips, the points where the face sticks out. The moment the mesh touches skin, that spot is no longer protected, and a bee that lands there gets through. So the fitting test is not done standing still: you have to turn your head, look down and mime crouching over a hive, which is when the skirt pulls and the front comes towards your face.

02 · THE FIT

If it is tight, the answer is not another size but another type

This model comes in one size and a compact cut, and there is no larger version to move to. If your nose brushes the front when you try it on, the answer is not to loosen the elastics but to change the kind of veil: a fencing veil does not fit around the skull, it hangs from the shoulders, so head measurement stops being the problem. Always try it on with the clothing you will wear in the apiary and with your hair as you tie it for work: a bun or a cap underneath changes the fit completely.

03 · THE SKIRT

What fails is almost always at the neck, not at the face

The veil covers head and face; the rest is down to the garment underneath. Spread the skirt over the smock or suit, never tucked inside, fasten it and run your hand round the neckline looking for the gap — a bee climbing your chest finds that gap before you do. And before every entry, hold the screen up to the light: a small tear, an open seam or a deformation that brings the mesh closer to your face turns a sound veil into one that is not.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

No head-circumference or face-clearance measurements are published, so the fit is checked wearing it, with the full kit on. Store it without crushing the square structure: a hat that loses its shape brings the mesh towards the face, which is exactly what you do not want.
