01 · THE KHAKI

A colour made for working at night

The colour came out of a real problem. In New Zealand, beekeepers preparing hives for pollination at night found that the moon lit up their white suits and drew the bees straight to the beekeeper. Sherriff dyed a khaki fabric for them, and it brought a bonus you notice every day: mud and propolis show far less than on white trousers.

02 · WHICH SIZE?

Go by waist and inside leg, not by height

These are work trousers worn over your normal clothes, so measure yourself dressed: your waist where you will wear them, and your inside leg from floor to crotch. These are BJ Sherriff’s measurements for each size:

If you are tall, check the inside leg first: the XL goes up to 90 cm. If you fall between two sizes, send us both measurements and we will tell you which one to order.

03 · FASTENINGS

Ankles and waist closed, because that’s where bees get in

On beekeeping trousers the ends are what matter: a bee walking on the ground climbs in at the ankle, and one finds a gap at the waist when you bend down and the smock rides up.

The S40 has elastic and a zip at each ankle: the zip opens the hem so you can get the trousers on and off without fighting your boots, and the elastic gathers it once closed. At the top there is sturdy waist elastic and belt loops. Your smock or jacket always goes over the trousers, overlapping the waist.

04 · POCKETS

Hive tool to hand, and your adrenaline too

There are two roomy thigh pockets and a side hive tool pocket, which is where the tool always ends up when you need both hands to lift a frame. The maker also designs it to carry an adrenaline auto-injector if you have a diagnosed allergy: on you and easy to find without taking anything off.
