01 · FASTENINGS

Opens at the front, closes where bees get in

The Honey Rustler closes with a sturdy central zip and has drop sleeves, roomy enough to wear over your own clothes. Sherriff originally designed it for a beekeeper working from a wheelchair: it goes on and off without pulling it over your head, even if your movement is restricted.

The cuffs close with deep hook-and-loop fastening and have a thumb loop that slips over your glove, so no gap opens between sleeve and glove when you reach out. The waist elastic adjusts with a cord toggle. On the front there are four pockets with hook-and-loop closures and a key clip in one of the lower ones.

02 · THE VEIL

Throw it back between apiaries, take it off to wash

The veil uses Sherriff’s ClearView mesh, black nylon woven with hundreds of fine holes, designed for good all-round vision and ventilation, glasses included.

The hood unzips and throws back onto your shoulders without taking it off, handy for driving between apiaries. And it comes off completely to be washed separately. It is the part that wears first, and it is also sold as a replacement.

03 · SIZING

Chest decides; height breaks a tie

Sherriff’s chart starts from your chest measured over the clothes you will wear underneath, and the garment is already cut with room to spare. Take the size that includes your measurement, without going down:

04 · COLOUR AND WASHING

Khaki because of the moon, and a 30 °C wash

Khaki was born in New Zealand: beekeepers preparing hives for pollination at night found that the moon reflected off their white suits and drew the bees towards them. The fabric is a fine-weave polycotton with a smooth finish, so a bee that lands doesn’t catch its feet in the fibres and flies off again.

The body goes in the machine at 30 °C with unscented detergent and no fabric conditioner; no bleach, no tumble dryer, and line dry. The hood never goes in the machine: take it off and wash it by hand.
