01 · WHERE SHE GETS IN
Overlap the leg first, then tighten
The order matters more than how tight the strap is. The trouser leg goes outside the boot top and the strap wraps around that join: tucked inside, the bee climbing the boot walks straight into the trousers and the strap does nothing. Tighten just enough that the fabric does not shift, without cutting off the circulation. And check it by moving: take a few steps and crouch before you are standing at the hive.
02 · THE FASTENING
What kills the grip is what gets stuck in it
A hook-and-loop fastening loses its bite when the hook side fills with dust, mud, grass and wax, and in an apiary that happens fast. Clean it with a fingernail or a small brush and it grips again; when it no longer does, it is time to replace it. When storing them, fasten each strap onto itself: they do not stick to everything else in the bag and you do not lose one of the two.
03 · BEFORE YOU BUY
It is a fitting accessory, not protection in itself. If your trousers already have a zip at the hem and pull on over the boot, you probably do not need it.
