Details of Beekeeper's Gaiters

Pair of gaiters in heavy cotton with elastic at both ends and a strap that passes under the boot so they do not ride up.

The gap between boot and trouser is where the bee gets in when you crouch to look at the entrance. These close it, and that is their whole job.

01 · THE GAP

It covers the join; it does not replace the boot

The gaiter runs from the boot shaft to the trouser leg and closes the join the bee slips through when you crouch, when you lift a super or when you walk between hives. It is not footwear and it is not impact protection: it is the piece that removes the gap, which is where the pointless sting happens — the one that stops the work for nothing.

02 · THE FIT

Two elastics and a strap under the sole

It is held by elastic top and bottom and fixed with a strap that passes under the boot, so it does not ride up as you walk or end up halfway down your calf after half an hour in the apiary. Put it on with the trouser leg tucked inside: leave it outside and you have closed the gap at the top and opened it at the bottom.

03 · THE COTTON

Summer, which is when they get used

They are made of heavy, breathable cotton, and that matters because you wear them exactly when you already have the suit and the veil on. They make no noise, add no heat and wash with the rest of the apiary clothing. Store them dry: damp with wax and propolis on it is what turns them stiff.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Sold in pairs. If your boot has a very wide shaft, or you wear tall wellingtons, check that the top elastic stretches enough before counting on them.

✓ FITSWork boots of the kind usual in beekeeping, with the trouser tucked inside.
✕ DOESN'T FITAs a substitute for boots or beekeeping trousers: they only cover the join between the two.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDBoots or trousers.
