EN 388 CE CERTIFIED | 15 cm GAUNTLET |
Full cowhide with a water-repellent treatment: thick enough to protect, supple enough to feel the frame.
Cowhide across the whole hand — no sheepskin panels — treated to take rain, dew and syrup days without soaking through or going stiff. A 15 cm gauntlet with breathable mesh.
01 · WHY FULL COWHIDE
Two-layer gloves use a sheepskin palm because it is cheaper. This one uses cowhide across the whole hand: a thicker, denser leather that takes the wear of pulling and seating frames session after session and does not open at the palm in its first season. It is the glove you work calmly in with a defensive colony, on long brood inspections or with plenty of bees in the air.
02 · THE GAUNTLET AND THE TREATMENT
The gauntlet combines leather, a breathable mesh section that keeps the forearm from sweating and reinforced denim, and it closes at the top with an adjustable hook-and-loop strap: you set it to your arm and it does not shift when you reach into a super. The water-repellent treatment is what separates this from plain cowhide: it sheds water instead of absorbing it, so an inspection in the dew or an afternoon handling syrup does not leave it rigid once dry.
03 · THE FEEL OF LEATHER
Cowhide does not mean clumsy. It arrives soft and shapes to hand and fingers, and it softens further with use: you feel the top bar, the weight of the frame and where your hand is without looking at it. That is what separates a good beekeeping glove from a work glove — in handling, feeling what you do is half the craft. With a very defensive colony the odd stinger may lodge in the leather: you scrape it off and carry on. Getting through is rare, and when it happens it is at the flex points.
04 · BEFORE YOU BUY
This is the right glove for defensive colonies, long inspections and damp work. For the fine work of queen rearing — picking up and marking, handling cages and cups — some prefer nitrile with a gauntlet, thinner and washable under the tap; and if your everyday is calm and dry, standard leather costs less. Sizing follows the measurement across your knuckles; those who want room to work usually go one up.
