01 · WHAT IT KILLS AND WHAT IT DOESN'T

It finishes off adult moths, not the eggs

This is what explains almost every failure. Sulphur smoke kills adult moths of Galleria mellonella, but it does not touch eggs or larvae already in the wax. That is why a single treatment settles nothing: the eggs left behind hatch later and within a month you have the same problem. Protection comes from repeating, not from the first application.

02 · THE SCHEDULE

Two in autumn and three as spring starts

The pattern that covers the insect's full cycle is two treatments in autumn ten days apart — the second catches whatever hatched after the first — and three weekly ones at the start of spring, before the equipment goes back on the hives. What you are protecting is the store with the wax in it: once moth gets into a stack of supers, drawn comb from several seasons is lost in weeks.

03 · HOW IT IS USED

Closed space, twelve hours, and air it before it goes back

Reckon on 60 to 100 grams of sulphur per cubic metre of the space being treated. The wick hangs from the hook, is lit, and the canister goes on top of the frames, inside the stack of supers or an empty hive, closed up well so the smoke cannot escape. Leave it a minimum of twelve hours. Before returning frames to a working colony, air them: the equipment has to come out with no smell on it.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is the container only: sulphur wicks are ordered separately. And although the format is the same one used for sulphuring wine barrels, the job here is the wax store. It is not a hive health treatment and it does not act on mites.
