01 · A BARRIER, NOT A POISON

How it actually works

It is raw lanolin: a thick, sticky grease that ants will not cross. It is not an insecticide, it carries no active substance and it is not eaten — it works by blocking the way, not by poisoning.

Being insoluble in water is what makes it useful in an apiary: rain does not wash it off, unlike a powder or a chalk line.

02 · WHERE IT GOES

On the legs, not on the hive

Put an unbroken ring around the legs of the stand, which is what lifts the hive off the ground. Putting it on the stand rather than on the hive woodwork has two advantages: the hive stays clean and renewing the ring does not mean touching it.

And the limit to respect: never on the entrance or inside. A bee that gets smeared with grease cannot clean it off, and the grease ends up in the comb. Outside only.

03 · WHY A BARRIER FAILS

The bridge you don't see

Nearly every failure is the same one: something touches the hive and the ants walk round the ring. Tall grass, a branch, a stone leaning on a leg, a strap that reaches the ground. Before applying, clear around it and check the hive touches the ground only through its legs.

The ring needs going over: dust sticks to it and forms a crust that can be walked on, and in strong heat the grease softens and sags. A glance on each visit is enough.
