Special Dominguez crown board for stationary Dadant Blatt hives, with published dimensions of 50 × 43 cm and a height of 3 cm. It combines a perimeter wooden frame, a central panel and a visible circular opening, and sits between the top of the hive body and the outer cover.
The word ‘Dadant’ alone is not sufficient to guarantee a proper fit. This crown board corresponds to the stationary Dadant Blatt format and the specified geometry; it has not been verified for Dadant US, Langstroth, Layens or for a hive that merely has similar dimensions. If the hive is not of the same system, compare the outer bearing surface and the rebate before purchasing.
The central opening can serve as a connection point for other elements of the system, but it should not be assumed that it must always remain open or closed. Its configuration depends on the hive’s cover, ventilation, feeding and management. Check the original assembly and ensure there are no accidental openings that could allow water ingress or robbing.
A crown board that is properly fitted ensures the top seal is secure and makes it easier to open the hive in layers. It does not replace a weatherproof outer cover, nor does it, on its own, resolve condensation problems: both depend on the hive as a whole, the climate and the actual strength of the colony.
