This Layens medium super, designed exclusively for 10-frame Layens hives (also known as "Layens princess"), is an ideal solution for those looking to maximize honey production without compromising the hive’s organization. By adding this super, you can transition from a horizontal brood setup to a semi-vertical arrangement, enhancing honey quality and facilitating its collection.
A Layens hive grows sideways. This is the part that lets one grow, for once, upwards.
A half-super holding 9 half-frames for the 10-frame Layens, the one known as the «princesa». It arrives in pine with the nine frames already wired inside.
01 · ONLY FOR THE 10-FRAME
It is cut for the 10-frame Layens body, which leaves the factory with the rebate needed to take it. It does not fit the 12-frame Layens or the 14-frame: it is not a matter of forcing it, it simply does not seat. For those bodies there is the other Layens half-super, the one with 10 half-frames.
If you bought the complete «Princesa», it already came with one: this is the second, or the spare. And the usual reminder about format: the Layens frame is not interchangeable with Dadant or Langstroth.
02 · WHAT CHANGES AT HARVEST
In an ordinary Layens the honey is stored in the same frames that once held brood, and it shows in the jar: darker colour and impurities carried over from used cells.
With the half-super on, the honey is made upstairs, in frames that have only ever seen honey. That is what lets you harvest flow by flow, taking each one off when it is ready instead of letting them blend in the same frame. And there is a more prosaic advantage: you harvest a half-height box rather than pulling frames out of the nest one by one.
03 · WHEN TO PUT IT ON
Bees do not move up into the half-super until the brood chamber is full. Adding it early gives them an empty storey to keep warm; adding it late leaves them with no room just as the flow arrives — and a Layens with no room swarms.
The moment is with the nest complete and the bloom starting. From there the management gets more active: you have to watch for swarming, which is the price of working semi-vertical.
04 · HOW IT ARRIVES
The nine half-frames come already wired: all they need is foundation. The four corners are reinforced with galvanised corner plates and the sides carry grab rails for lifting it when loaded.
The timber is supplied bare. Before it goes out to the apiary it wants outside protection — linseed oil or water-based paint — and time to dry. Inside, nothing is painted: the bees finish the interior with propolis.
