01 · WHY PROTEIN

Royal jelly comes from a gland that depends on the diet

Nurse bees feed the brood on royal jelly and make it in the hypopharyngeal glands, whose size depends on the pollen they ate in their first ten days. Without it the glands shrink and those bees move to foraging sooner. That is why the effect shows up not in the bee that eats it but in the next generation, and why you supplement for six weeks running: that is two brood cycles, and a single patty does not do the job.

02 · WHAT IS IN IT

Plant protein, no soya, and acidified

The protein comes from maize gluten, wheat protein, dried distillers grains and inactivated yeasts, with malt. No soya, no animal-derived ingredients, no artificial colours or flavours, non-GMO. It declares the ten essential amino acids — the ones a bee cannot make and has to take in — and it is acidified, close to the pH of honey, which is the environment its gut is built for. The powder is fine: a bee only feeds on liquids and will not take particles above 200 microns, so particle size matters as much as the percentage.

03 · HOW TO PREPARE IT

Three ways, and the patty is the one that pays

The proportions are the maker's. Olive oil will not do: bees find it unpalatable.

Patty · 450 g200 g of powder + 200 ml of 2:1 syrup + 15 g of vegetable oil. Knead it, press it between two sheets of baking paper and lay it on the frames. It works out at 20 % protein
Liquid1 kg in 15 L of thick syrup, breaking up every lump so it stays in suspension. Taken faster, but protein drops to 3-4 %: it sustains, it does not start brood
DryIn a feeder sheltered from wind and damp. The least well used of the three

In nucs and weak colonies drop to 200-250 g patties: they get eaten sooner, before they can ferment or get wax moth.

04 · WHEN

Ahead of the flow and ahead of winter

Coming out of winter to prepare the build-up, in autumn so the bee goes in with reserves laid down, in newly made nucs, and when the field fails: drought, little in flower, poor pollen or hornet pressure. Count backwards from when you want the bees ready, not from the day you spot the problem. And note: bees do not need patties all year round; if varied pollen is coming in, this is not needed.

⚠ PRECAUTIONS

Do not feed with honey supers on the hive or during a flow: whatever goes up into the super ends up in the honey you are going to jar. It is a complementary feed: it provides protein and micronutrients, but it cures nothing, it does not replace varroa control, and it will not turn a colony without bees into a strong one.
