01 · THE LAYENS VERSION COSTS €195 MORE

And that is the whole penalty for the format

The same CLASSIC in Langstroth and Dadant is in our range at €4,131.40. The Layens one, at €4,326.45: a difference of €195.04.

For a machine rebuilt around a taller and wider frame, with a longer cutting stroke and a resized feeder, that premium is cheap. Working Layens usually costs more in equipment, and here it does not.

02 · TWENTY MINUTES BEFORE YOU START

Which is a scheduling figure, not a catalogue one

The knives are 2 kW fed at 24 V and take about 20 minutes to reach working temperature. This is not a machine you switch on when the first frame arrives.

You switch it on before you unload the supers from the trailer, and by then it is ready. Twenty minutes standing still in mid-harvest, with people waiting, is half an hour of the day thrown away every day.

03 · LOW VOLTAGE IS NOT A COLD BLADE

And this has to be said plainly

Feeding the blade at 24 V instead of from the mains lowers the electrical risk, and that is why it is done. But it is 2 kW of heat put into a steel blade: the knife is hot, and low voltage does not change that.

It is cleaned cold, at the end of the day, with the machine off and the blades no more than warm; they are accessible for exactly that. And stuck wax comes off better then than the next morning, once it has set.

04 · EIGHT FRAMES A MINUTE

And the arithmetic adds up, which does not always happen

The feeder is a 0.12 kW gearmotor at 9 rpm synchronised with the cut, and the stated output is up to 8 Layens frames a minute. Nine turns a minute, one frame a turn: the figures are consistent with each other.

In practice the ceiling is not the machine: it is whoever feeds it and whoever takes the frames away. Eight frames a minute only holds up with two people and the supers already in the room.

05 · THE LAYENS FRAME IS ANOTHER WORLD

And that is why it needs its own machine

The Layens is a horizontal hive: there are no supers and no half supers, every frame is the same large format and they all come out of the same body. That simplifies the harvest and complicates the machinery.

A tall frame needs the advance to be firm — if it slips, the cut comes out uneven — and the heat to arrive spread along a longer blade. That is exactly what a machine adapted from Langstroth does not do well, and the reason this model exists.
