A robustly constructed uncapping fork, with a stainless-steel head and firmly mounted tines, plus a thick plastic handle. It is designed to remove cappings that are sunken, in corners or on an uneven surface, where a single pass with a knife cannot achieve an even result.
Hold the fork at a shallow angle and make short strokes, lifting the wax film without cutting too deeply into the cell walls. The more pressure you apply, the more wax and honey you will dislodge. Use the fork to correct any low areas after the main pass, rather than trying to level the entire comb surface by force with the tines.
Check that the frame contains ripe honey and no brood. Place it on a tray or bench to catch cappings and drips, and keep your free hand clear of the path of the tines.
Remove any wax residue when finished, wash the work area where necessary and dry the fork thoroughly before storing it. Do not use it as a lever or strike the tines: its precision depends on them remaining aligned.
