Braided straw colonial hat with a wide brim and stiff crown, to wear under the square beekeeping veil: the brim keeps the mesh away from the face and the straw lets air through where a plastic helmet holds it. One size. The veil is not included: it is the square veil 1996.

It is the mailbox question, four times: the hat is sold alone, and the veil that fits it is the square one with elastic; with both pieces you have the complete colonial veil.

01 · WHAT IT IS AND IS NOT

The veil’s support, not the veil

A colonial hat works as a frame: the crown lifts the veil above the head and the brim keeps it away from nose, ears and neck, where a mesh against the skin lets stings through. Alone, it protects from nothing. The square veil 1996 fits over the brim with its elastic and closes below with its ties; it is the part that tears and clouds, and that is why it is sold separately, so the hat is not thrown away.

02 · WHY STRAW

Cooler than the plastic helmet

Braided straw breathes: air moves through the crown and sweat does not stay inside as in a closed helmet. That is what the reviews say, the Spanish one and the two French ones: roomy, off the head and cooler. In exchange it is less hard than plastic: dry it in the shade if it gets wet and store it without crushing the brim.

03 · THE SIZE

One size, with an inner band

It is one size with an inner band; the maker does not publish the exact head girth, so if a very large or very small head worries you, ask us before ordering. Before work: tilt the head, look up and bend down with the veil on; the hat must not turn or lift the veil’s closure.

The hat is supplied alone; the square veil 1996 and the suit come separately.
