01 · WHAT AVOCADO CHANGES

A softer, creamier bar

Avocado is a liquid oil at room temperature, not a butter. In the bar that means creamier lather and a softer feel, but also less life in the soap dish than a cocoa or shea base.

In a damp bathroom, use a draining dish and keep it out of the spray. If you want a bar that lasts, this base takes being blended with a butter one.

02 · SOAP CLEANS, IT DOES NOT TREAT

What goes down the drain treats nothing

Soap is a rinse-off product: it is on the skin for a minute and then gone. What an oil in the base gives you is a wash that does not dry you out, not a treatment.

Treating is what creams do, because they stay on. A good soap shows in that it leaves no tightness, and that is plenty.

03 · MELT IT, DO NOT SAPONIFY IT

Bain-marie, and under 60 °C

A melt and pour base, already saponified: chop it, melt it in a bain-marie until it runs, and take it off. Above about 60 °C it loses water, thickens and the bar comes out with bubbles.

And like all of its kind it sweats: it contains glycerin, which draws moisture from the air. Wrap it in film as soon as it is cold and out of the mould.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

A melt-and-pour base, not finished soap. If you want a hard bar, the cocoa butter one suits you better.
