01 · WHAT A BASE IS

Soap already saponified, ready to melt

A melt-and-pour base arrives saponified from the factory. There is no caustic soda to handle and no weeks of curing as in the cold process: you melt, mix, and within the hour you have bars you can turn out.

That makes it the natural way into soapmaking, and also its limit: the base formula is given. What you add is colour, scent, shape and the odd extra — not the composition.

02 · THE JOJOBA

A technical detail worth understanding

Jojoba oil is not technically an oil: it is a liquid wax ester, and that is why it is far more stable against oxidation than an ordinary vegetable oil. In a soap base it brings a rich, oily feel without going rancid.

That is composition, not a promise: what a soap does is clean.

03 · HOW TO MELT IT

60-70 °C, and the scent last

Cut it up and melt it in a water bath or in short microwave bursts, without letting it boil: overheated, the block yellows and loses its clarity.

Colour goes in with the base molten and the fragrance last, below 60 °C, or a good part of it evaporates. Once poured, a spritz of alcohol on the surface pops the bubbles.

04 · SWEATING

The classic snag with glycerine bases

Glycerine attracts moisture, so a bar left out in a humid room sweats: droplets appear on the surface. It is not spoiled, but it looks wrong and it softens.

It is avoided by wrapping each bar in film as soon as it has fully set, and keeping them somewhere dry. A kilo makes about ten 100 g bars.

You buy it to make soap without chemistry: if you want to formulate from scratch, this is not the route.
