Details of Bee-Shaped Silicone Mould

Silicone bee-shaped mould for soap and wax. The finished piece measures 6.7 × 5.2 × 2 cm and comes to around 50 g of soap.

A mould belongs to the workshop or to the kitchen. Once wax or soap has been through it, it stops being food-safe — and washing it does not undo that.

01 · WORKSHOP OR KITCHEN, NOT BOTH

Silicone holds on to what goes through it

Silicone absorbs and holds residue from whatever is poured into it. Soap carries surfactants and wax leaves a film. If the mould has worked in the workshop, it does not go back to baking: for chocolate, use another mould and never cross them.

02 · HOW FAR IT GOES

20 bars per kilo, 22 candles

With soap base you get around 50 g per piece: 20 bars per kilo. In wax the same cavity weighs a little less — it is lighter than glycerin — so around 46 g and 22 candles per kilo. Weigh the first one and adjust.

03 · POURING AND TURNING OUT

Wax shrinks as it cools

Wax wants 70-75 °C: at its own melting threshold (62-65 °C) it starts to set before it reaches the bottom of the relief and the wings come out blunt.

And it shrinks as it cools, leaving a dip in the base: top it up a second time once it has taken, and turn it out cold.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is a single-cavity mould for soap and wax. If you assign it to the workshop, assign it for good.
