01 · WHY FENCING

The mesh holds itself out in front of your face

A screen does not stop a sting: what stops it is the air between the mesh and the skin. On a hat veil that distance is held by the structure of the hat, and if the hat is tight the mesh comes to your nose. The fencing type solves it differently: the visor is rigid and holds its own shape, and the whole thing hangs from the shoulders instead of gripping the head. That makes it the usual answer for anyone who cannot find their size in hat veils, and the one that lets you wear a cap or tied-back hair underneath without changing the fit.

02 · THE SKIRT

It covers more than a short veil and still lets air through

The skirt is mesh too, so it comes down over shoulders and upper torso without shutting off the airflow — which is what you notice in July, when a closed garment turns an inspection into a sauna. It closes with a zip that runs round the join and finishes with the lower drawcord, which sets the edge over your clothing. The cord is the part most people neglect: badly pulled, the skirt rides up when you crouch and leaves a gap right above the chest.

03 · BEFORE YOU GO IN

Close the whole zip and turn your head

With the veil on and before you go near the hives: close the zip all the way — half the frights come from the last ten centimetres — set the cord, and turn your head to both sides while looking down. The mesh must not touch nose, ears or neck in any of those positions. And hold the visor up to the light each season: a deformed mesh or an open seam no longer keeps that gap.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It covers head, neck, shoulders and upper torso: it does not cover arms, hands or the lower body, so it is worn over a closed garment and with gloves. And no mesh promises freedom from stings — what it does is keep away the one that reaches your face.
