Dadant Blatt half super frame in pine, with four vertical wires already threaded through the side bars, untensioned. Outer dimensions 47 × 16 cm — the French/Italian standard, not to be confused with the Dadant US format which measures 48 × 16 cm. It is a straight frame without a Hoffman shoulder, so the bee space between adjacent frames is maintained with castellated runners in the super or with a pair of plastic Hoffman clips on the top bar.
Drops straight into any Dadant Blatt half super, the dominant standard in France and Italy. Do not confuse it with the Dadant US: the Blatt top bar is 47 cm long, the US version is 48 cm. If you are restocking and mixing formats, the frame either hangs unevenly or does not seat at all. Check the format of your super before ordering.
The frame ships with four vertical wires already threaded through the holes in the side bars, untensioned. You tension them with a wire crimper, embed the foundation onto the wire with a spur embedder or a transformer, and the frame is ready to put in the super. Vertical wiring handles the lateral loads of tangential extraction particularly well in shallow frames and stops the comb from sagging in the heat of summer.
Without a Hoffman shoulder cut into the side bars, you set the spacing with whatever system you already run in the super: castellated runners in the box itself, or plastic Hoffman clips snapped onto the top bar of the frame. That makes it easy to combine with material you already have set up in another format.
