DADANT BLATT FRAMES

Moulded plastic queen excluder for Dadant Blatt 12-frame hives: the queen stays in the brood box and the super fills with honey alone.

This is the big square format, 500 × 500 mm, for the 12-frame Dadant Blatt — the French and Italian standard. If you run Dadant US, the common hive in Spain, this excluder will not fit: the difference is in the frame top bar.

01 · COMPATIBILITY

Look at the frame top bar and the doubt is gone

The Dadant Blatt takes frames with a 47 cm top bar; the Dadant US, 48 cm. That centimetre changes everything: this excluder measures 500 × 500 mm and sits on Blatt 12-frame boxes, wooden or plastic. It will not do for Dadant US or Langstroth, and not for a 10-frame Blatt either, which has its own format. Nicot moulds the size into the frame of the excluder itself, so if you have several in the store you can check at a glance.

02 · HIVE MANAGEMENT

Honey without brood, and a queen you can always find

Workers pass between the bars and the queen does not, so there is no laying above the excluder. The super fills with honey alone and the combs never accumulate cocoon remains or brood pollen: they stay pale season after season and extraction runs cleaner. And every inspection gets shorter — with the queen confined below, finding her means opening the brood box and nothing else.

03 · BUILD

Warmer inside the hive than a metal excluder

It is injection-moulded in one piece from semi-rigid, food-grade recyclable plastic in ivory, 2.5 mm thick and with rounded edges: there are no burrs or welds to damage the workers' wings as they pass. Against a metal excluder, it does not create a cold zone inside the hive. Clean it by scraping, with hot water or by soaking in caustic soda; it withstands up to 110 °C.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

With black bees, think it over first

In some regions and with black bees it is worth weighing up: the excluder can hold the workers back from moving up into the super.
