Automatic, foldable line for making cast beeswax foundation directly from liquid beeswax. The RIETSCHE® VA Mini combines band formation, cell embossing, transport, cutting and stacking in one process intended for associations, co-operatives and professional beekeeping operations.

Here, “Mini” means shorter and foldable compared with a large VA line, not a benchtop mill: assembled, it is 2.1 m long, up to 1.3 m wide and 1.96 m high. The finished foundation size, site services and every option must be fixed in the technical quotation before the machine is ordered.

01 · CASTING PROCESS

From liquid wax to cut sheets, without preparing a rolled wax band

The insulated 70-litre tank melts and feeds the beeswax. As the wax passes between water-cooled engraved rollers it solidifies into a continuous band with the cell pattern already formed; an independently adjustable transport roller controls tension and the cutting section divides the band to the contracted configuration. The standard rigid table receives approximately 15–20 sheets. This process is different from rolling a pre-made wax band. Rietsche states that cast foundation remains more stable at high hive temperatures but is less flexible in the cold than rolled foundation. The right system therefore depends on the foundation you want to make, not simply on kilograms per hour.

02 · SIZE AND OUTPUT

18 kg/h is a Dadant-width maximum, not a guaranteed production rate

Rietsche publishes an output of up to 18 kg/h at Dadant width and explicitly states that it is lower for narrower foundation. Roller width is 400 mm and the standard cell size is 5.4 mm with a ±0.05 mm tolerance; other cell sizes are available at extra cost. Sheet length is adjusted electronically with a published tolerance of ±1 mm. A 400 mm roller does not by itself confirm Layens or any other finished size: the quotation should state finished width and length, cell size, number of lanes and knife arrangement. Actual output will also depend on that configuration, the beeswax and process stability.

03 · SITE AND UTILITIES

Plan cooling, power and floor space before fixing the project

The machine uses a plastic release-agent tank, a heat exchanger and a cold-water connection. Where no cold-water connection is available, Rietsche offers an optional cooling unit rated at approximately 3 kW of cooling capacity. That figure is not total electrical consumption; the separately published 3 kW for the wax tank refers only to its heater. Voltage, phases, total connected load and the exact compressed-air requirement are not stated on the current public VA Mini page and must be confirmed for the quoted unit. Allow for a 0.69–1.3 m width, 2.1 m working length and 1.6 m folded length. It folds and moves on wheels, but remains industrial machinery.

The standard version has a rigid table; the electrically operated lifting table, which stacks up to 7 kg, is optional. A cooling unit, compressor, wax pump or separate sterilising tank must not be assumed to be included either. The official page itself warns that older photographs show a different container from the plastic one supplied under the machine. Ask the quotation to itemise sheet format, cell size, utilities, options, transport, assembly, commissioning and training. Use clean, settled beeswax with no free water, following the manual and Rietsche's process settings. Hot wax, rollers, cutting, electricity and cooling circuits all require a trained operator, guards kept in place and energy isolation before cleaning or intervention. The 70-litre tank melts and feeds wax; it does not sterilise it.
