01 · WET THE MOULD

The step that decides whether it works

Here is why some people get it right first time and others never do: the silicone has to be wetted before every sheet with water and a few drops of washing-up liquid. Without that film the wax sticks and the sheet tears as you release it. And between sheets, cool the mould down — a dip in cold water is enough — because a warm mould no longer chills the wax and everything turns sticky.

02 · THE WAX

Melted, but not boiling

Melt the wax and pour it liquid and properly hot onto the bottom half; then close the mould and press evenly, without slamming, so it reaches the corners. A few seconds and you can open it: release from one corner, pulling gradually and diagonally. If the wax is too cold it does not reach the edges; if it is too hot the sheet comes out soft and deforms as you lift it.

03 · THE SIZE

Check the window of your frame

The mould is Langstroth format with a standard 5.4 mm cell, but it is worth saying what users report: the sheet comes out at around 40 × 21 cm, not exactly the nominal 42 × 20. In practice a sheet always gets fitted to the frame, so measure your frame's inner window and trim — but better to know before buying than after. It does not do Dadant or Layens: Langstroth only.

04 · WHO IT MAKES SENSE FOR

Short runs and your own wax

With your own wax and this mould you close the circle: melt, emboss and put back into the frame a wax whose origin you know. That said, it is sheet by sheet work: to equip a whole apiary, bought foundation works out far better in time. Its place is small runs, wax you trust, and anyone who wants to try before building a mill.
