Moving 200 kg of honey from a drum to a honey tank and metering a thin trickle to feed a filling machine are two jobs the same pump can do —if it can adjust. Cheap models give you one speed and expect everything to fit it; professional lobe pumps solve the problem but cost 3-4× what a semi-professional beekeeper can justify. This rotary-vane pump rated at 900 L/h with a control panel and speed regulation sits right in the useful middle: enough flow for drum-to-drum transfer, enough control finesse for filling machines without clogging, mounted on a wheeled trolley and driven by a single-phase 370 W motor that plugs into any socket in the honey house.

🎛️ Control panel with speed drive — the control that changes the use

The panel lets you regulate rotor speed, and that changes the pump's real-world application. At full speed, the nominal 900 L/h (about 15 L/min or ≈ 1,300 kg/h of fluid honey) moves fast between 300 kg drums and honey tanks; at low speed —around 30-40 % of max— you can feed a filling machine or jarring line without clogging, without generating foam and without flooding the hopper. That's the functional difference versus the sibling HP-122 (same pump, no panel): the panel's price premium isn't decorative, you pay for doing two jobs with one machine.

🔧 How a vane pump works — simple, honest mechanics

The vane pump works by positive displacement: the rotor spins eccentrically inside the body, and the rubber vanes (seated in radial slots of the rotor) fly out under centrifugal force, seal against the casing and push honey from inlet to outlet in a continuous cycle. Versus a peristaltic, it gives more flow per euro and starts better on viscous honeys; versus a lobe pump, it's several times cheaper and enough for a semi-professional workload. The trade-off: rubber vanes wear (inspect once a season) and the pump must never run dry —without honey in between, the vanes rub against the casing and burn within seconds.

🍯 Which honeys it moves well (and which to leave alone)

Perfect with liquid or warmed honeys (25-30 °C): multi-flower, sunflower, orange blossom, freshly-harvested eucalyptus. Handles reasonably well moderately dense honeys at 28-30 °C (chestnut, non-crystallised heather). It's not the pump for crystallised or cold honey: if the honey has lumps or sits below 18-20 °C, the 370 W motor is underpowered, current rises, and you'll burn it out if you insist. Honey-house rule of thumb: if honey won't flow freely from the drum's gate, don't pump it —warm it first in a warming cabinet. For larger volumes or routinely difficult honeys, step up to a lobe pump.

🌡️ The 40 °C rule — don't degrade the honey while pumping

This isn't specific to this pump, it's a general honey-transfer rule: never move honey above 40 °C. Above that, HMF rises (hydroxymethylfurfural, a degradation indicator that EU regulation caps at 40 mg/kg) and enzymes like diastase oxidise, which shows up in lab analysis and, more tellingly, in aroma. 💡 Veteran's tip — priming, cleaning and maintenance

First start-up: don't run the pump dry. Prime it by feeding honey through the inlet until the body is wet, or start with warm water if you plan to wash it before the first transfer. If you stop mid-job: don't let honey solidify inside —flush with warm water, let drain, store dry. End of season: disassemble the outlet gate and the body cap, inspect the vanes; if you see cracked or chipped rubber, replace before next season (standard spares in beekeeping catalogues). With this basic maintenance the pump handles 8-10 seasons of semi-professional use without drama.
