Langstroth super with reinforced perimeter rims for stable stacking and strap attachment in migratory apiaries. Finger-jointed pine, interlocking corner joints, linseed oil finish. Includes 10 wired Hoffman frames — just add your foundation wax. Outer dimensions 510 × 422 × 240 mm. Strapping system (ratchet straps, fix-elem) not included.
Langstroth super with reinforced perimeter rims for stable stacking, built for migratory apiaries that move between flows — not for fixed yards. Solid finger-jointed pine, finger-jointed corners, linseed oil finish, and the 10 wired Hoffman frames already fitted. Ready to take your foundation wax and start the season.
The wooden rims that protrude top and bottom are the visible difference from a fixed Langstroth super. They do three jobs at once: (1) the top rim of one box keys into the bottom rim of the next, so stacked supers do not shift on a bumpy road or unpaved track; (2) they provide a fixing surface for ratchet straps, lashings or fix-elem-type hooks; and (3) they double as a hand-grip when lifting a full super with both hands. Without those rims, a stacked super slides as soon as the truck pitches — that is why a fixed super does not move on the road as is.
Finger-jointed pine: a pine board glued at the ends, more dimensionally stable than a single-piece batten — it minimises warping when the box swings between truck-bed heat and overnight field humidity. The four corners are assembled with interlocking finger joints: the mechanical fit takes the weight, the nails just close it. Finished with one coat of linseed oil, not paint or varnish — it protects the wood without sealing the pores, lets the box breathe, and can be re-oiled after a few seasons without stripping anything.
Ships with its 10 Hoffman frames already fitted and wired. Hoffman frames have built-in spacers on the side bars, so no separate spacer rail is required: the bee space is fixed at the factory, the frames lift cleanly during inspections without the spacers falling off, and they drop back into place without fighting. All you need to do is add your sheets of foundation wax and go — you choose the foundation source and gauge, which in larger apiaries makes a real difference to cost and to your wax-hygiene control.
Outer dimensions 510 × 422 mm with 240 mm of height, the American Langstroth standard. Stacks on any Langstroth floor, brood box, crown board or roof in the catalogue — including open-mesh floors and plastic bases. Not compatible with Dadant Blatt (430 × 500 mm) or Layens. A full super yields between 18 and 25 kg of honey depending on the flow (heather, oilseed rape, lime blossom, mixed flora). In migratory work, keep 1-2 spare supers per hive: when a strong flow comes in, you do not want to be the beekeeper who arrived without supers and just had to watch.
The perimeter rims stabilise the stack but do not mechanically fix the pile to the floor. To move the hive on the road you need an additional fastening system — ratchet straps, fix-elem hooks or apiary nets — which is not included in this pack and is sold separately. On a fixed yard, weight alone is enough; on a dirt track at 60 km/h, it is not.
