Details of ANEL® LockFit Plastic Screened Bottom Board for Langstroth — Set with Tray, Door and Heels

The wooden floor is one of the first parts of a Langstroth hive to give in: humidity warps it, washing rots it, and varroa treatments lose effectiveness if you can't properly monitor mite drop. This ANEL® LockFit screened bottom board, made of ventilated plastic with a tray that slides in from either side, tackles all three problems at once and snaps onto wooden or plastic hive bodies without play.

🧩 Universal perimeter frame

The reinforced LockFit frame fits Langstroth hive bodies in both wood and plastic, with no spacers or adapters. Secure it to the body with standard metal hive clips for detachable use, or run screws through the small perimeter holes if you want a permanent join. The large base holes let you bolt the floor straight onto a pallet, keeping everything stable during migratory beekeeping or when setting up an apiary.

📐 Mesh floor and varroa tray with counting grid

The top surface is a fully screened mesh that vents the brood box and lets fallen varroa drop out of reach of the bees — essential to stop mites climbing back up after a treatment or grooming bout. The collection tray slides in from front or back. From the front it extends the landing board and softens the touchdown for foragers; from the back it sits flush and protected. It carries a printed grid that speeds up varroa counts considerably, giving you an objective reading of mite pressure on every colony. In winter you can leave it inserted to reduce airflow through the base when temperatures drop.

🚪 Rotating entrance disc

The entrance carries a rotating blue disc that defends the colony against wasps, death's-head hawkmoths, mice and snakes. To shut the hive completely, turn the disc to the solid (no-hole) face. Removal is instant: a light press from either side and the rear pins release it without tools.

🛠️ Extra handling features

  • Vertical division-board guides: ideal for raising nucs or running two independent colonies side by side in the same hive.
  • Optional black heels included: snap into place beneath the floor, lift it slightly off the ground and stop dirt and stones from entering the base holes.
  • Built-in receptacles for the ANEL® pollen trap: drop it in later with no extra modifications.

🔄 Improvements over the classic ANEL® base (AN5100V)

If you've worked with the classic ANEL® base (AN5100V), these are the three practical differences you'll notice:

FunctionClassic ANEL® baseLockFit (this model)
Varroa monitoring and winter ventilation modulationNo — mesh only, no tray guidesYes — gridded tray included
Profile on a migration palletIntegral non-slip feet that add heightFlat perimeter frame, no extra height
Landing board during transportAlways protrudesRetracts when the tray is inserted from the rear

In practice: in autumn you apply the treatment, pull the tray out 24 h later and count the dropped varroa using the printed grid. In winter, leave the tray inserted to reduce the airflow through the base. And during migration, slide the tray in from the rear and stack the hives on the pallet without the landing board getting in the way or adding extra height.
