A 25 kg sack of micaceous iron oxide, the mineral pigment mixed with linseed oil to make grey hive paint.
It is often sold as “iron powder”, but it is ground specular haematite, not metallic iron: the manufacturer's data sheet gives 96.76 % ferric oxide and no more than 5 % of particles above 90 microns.
01 · THE MIX
Most of its particles are flat flakes: it meets grade A of ISO 10601, which requires more than 65 % thin flakes. As the paint dries they overlap and lie parallel to the wood, and the standard credits them with slowing the ingress of external agents and protecting the oil from ultraviolet light. Add it gradually to the linseed oil and stir until no lumps remain. We don't give a fixed ratio: paint a test board, let it dry and adjust before mixing a larger batch.
02 · HANDLING
The safety data sheet does not classify it as hazardous. Even so, pour close to the container, with good ventilation and away from honey, wax and food; if a lot of dust rises, wear a mask. Store it dry between 5 and 50 °C: the SDS sets a maximum storage time of 24 months.
03 · BEFORE YOU BUY
This is pigment, not finished paint, and the sack holds about 11 litres of powder. The manufacturer's data sheet and SDS can be downloaded below.
