This grid is the working element of a pollen trap: returning foragers pass through its openings and some of their pollen loads are dislodged into the collection drawer. It is the NICOT PEIGNEPED10 model, measuring 440 × 38 mm, designed for integration into the NICOT pollen-trap floor and tunnel system. It is not a complete trap, but the bee-passage grid.
The length and support points must match the NICOT floor and the tunnel in which it sits. Before installation, offer up the component without forcing it and check that it lies flat, leaves no side passages and allows the drawer to enter and withdraw. The collection tray, tunnel and drone escapes are separate components: check which parts your assembly already retains. If bees can bypass the grid at the side, harvesting will be uneven and traffic will become concentrated.
Fit it to healthy, strong colonies with a continuous supply of incoming pollen. Allow an adaptation period with the passage open or partially open if your system permits, and watch that workers and drones can pass without congestion. A pollen-trap grid should not be left on as a matter of routine in weak colonies, during queen replacement, when stores are compromised or during in-hive treatments.
Remove the drawer frequently —daily in humid conditions— and do not allow pollen to remain warm, wet or compacted. Clean the grid when propolis, caked pollen or debris reduces the openings. The component removes the loads from the bees' legs; ventilation, frequent collection and subsequent processing are what prevent fermentation and deterioration.
