This is the push-in kind: it works on the wax without taking the queen out of the colony.
01 · FITTING IT
The spikes go in; the gate decides
Present the perimeter over a flat, clear patch of comb and press the spikes in evenly, until no gap is left for her to slip through, without crushing the wax. The gate opens the way when needed, without prising the whole cage off.
Like any cage of this kind, it has to let the workers go on tending the queen: that is what holds the colony together while she is confined.
02 · WHAT IT IS FOR
Marking, introduction and a laying stop
It keeps her still and findable while you mark her, it serves for a controlled introduction, and it stops the laying for a few days. Used for the last of those, the logic is the familiar one: with no sealed brood left, the mites are exposed on the bees, and that is when an authorised treatment reaches them.
It is handling equipment, not a treatment in itself, and it asks you to keep the calendar.
03 · BEFORE YOU BUY
