01 · HOW TO PLACE IT

A cut underneath and the patty over the frames, wrapper on

You make a cut in the underside of the wrapper and rest the patty directly on the brood frames, cut facing the bees. Hive warmth softens the paste from below and the bees feed through the opening. The plastic stays on: it acts as their floor and stops them sticking. In a Nicot-style top feeder it performs worse — the patty sits away from the cluster's warmth and the bees are slow to come up.

02 · THE 25 °C LIMIT

Above that it liquefies and you find it inside the hive

It is the warning that comes up most in reviews and it is no hidden fault: above 25 °C the texture softens until it runs and it can spill inside the hive. In late spring or an inland summer, either you put it in early and check at the next visit, or you switch to a feed that takes heat better. In cold it does not harden — with this product the problem is the other extreme.

03 · IT IS DRIER THAN A SOFT FONDANT

They take it well, but the colony has to warm it

Against a soft fondant, this one arrives firmer and drier. That is what gives it stability, and it also explains two recurring comments: with a weak colony or unsettled weather it is slow to go and leaves remains. The rule is the usual one with pastes: they eat what the colony can warm. Placed against the cluster with the hive active, it disappears without trouble.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

The usual question is this or the maintenance fondant: if what you want is to cover stores and have it last for months, that one; if you are after a vitamin contribution at the start of the season or between flows, this one. And the rule that does not depend on the product: do not feed during a flow if you are going to harvest that honey for sale.
