01 · ABOUT 95 GRAMS A CANDLE

The sum comes from the figure, not from the mould

The finished candle is 7.5 cm tall and 5 across. An egg that size takes on the order of 95 grams of wax, so a kilo gives about ten candles. The mould, on the outside, is larger: 10 cm tall and 6.8 across, 21.5 in circumference.

The wick that section asks for is the 3 × 8, and it is not included. At 5 cm across, an undersized wick means the candle burns down a central tunnel and leaves the whole wall — and the relief — unburnt.

02 · THE RELIEF SETS THE TEMPERATURE

Not cold enough to fill, not hot enough to mark

Wax melts between 62 and 65 °C and pours between 70 and 75 °C. Below that it arrives thick and the lavender spikes come out rounded, without definition; above 85 the wax darkens.

And there is an effect peculiar to detailed moulds: wax that is too hot shrinks more as it cools and leaves marks right on the edges of the relief. Pour slowly, in a thin stream against the wall, so as not to trap bubbles among the stems. The mould has a slit: before pouring, close it with rubber bands so the wax does not escape through the join.
