Replacement 16 g CO₂ cartridge for the Varroa Tester, available threaded and unthreaded.

It is diagnostic equipment: it gives you the figure you decide on, it does not treat the colony.

01 · THREADED OR NOT

Check yours before ordering

Both cartridges hold 16 g and look much alike from the outside, but they do not mount the same way. The threaded one belongs to the older Varroa Tester; the plain one, to the current CO₂ gun.

Getting it wrong leaves the replacement useless, so look at the neck of the cartridge you are replacing before picking the model.

02 · READING THE FIGURE

Mites divided by three gives the rate

The method takes a sample of 200 to 300 adult bees, stuns them with the gas and counts the mites that come loose. With 300 bees, dividing the mites by three gives the infestation rate in adult bees straight away.

Going above 3 % is already a serious risk signal, above all as the winter bees are being raised. Against an alcohol wash, CO₂ has the advantage that the sample goes back into the hive; in exchange the count depends on shaking properly, so do not take it as exact.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Sold singly, without the measuring kit. Keep it away from heat and carry a spare to the apiary: no gas, no count.
