Details of Mechanical Seal / Gland Packing for Minor® Liverani Pump (Pos. 9)

When a transfer pump starts weeping honey around the motor housing, or you notice it's slowly losing suction, the culprit is nearly always the same: the shaft mechanical seal. It's the part that separates the pumped liquid from the mechanical side, and with use — especially with crystallised honey or harsh cleaning cycles — it eventually loses its seal.

🔧 Ceramic-graphite, NBR and stainless steel

The assembly forms two contact faces — one fixed, one rotating, both in ceramic-graphite — that slide against each other on a thin liquid film, sealing with almost no friction. The elastomer is NBR, and the retaining parts (spring, seal holder) are stainless steel. NBR is fine with honey and syrups; for products that attack the seal (essential oils, solvents) check with us before fitting it.

⚙️ What it protects in the pump

This shaft seal sits at position 9 in the pump's exploded diagram, fitted between the rear cover and the shaft. Its job is to stop honey working its way toward the motor and air getting in at the same point. A worn seal doesn't just drip: it lets air in, the pump loses its prime, and flow drops even though the motor runs normally.

✓ Fits: Minor® 220V 2hp vane pump (position 9 in the exploded diagram).

✓ Also matches: position 8 on the LEGA vane pump, widely used among beekeepers (we don't sell LEGA, but it's the same part in their diagram).

💡 Change it at the first sign of dripping

Waiting until the seal fails completely costs far more: if crystallised honey reaches the motor housing, the repair bill runs several times the price of this part. With the pump stopped and depressurised, changing it is a simple workshop job — you only need to remove the rear cover, not strip the whole pump.
