Replacement shaft mechanical seal for the Liverani Minor transfer pump (80), reference 1131312500, position 9 in the parts list: two faces of ceramic and graphite turning against each other, NBR elastomer and stainless spring and seal holder. It is the part that keeps the honey from the motor; when it wears, the pump drips honey at the back of the body and loses prime. Same part as position 8 of Lega’s vane pump.

A pump sweating honey at the back does not have a broken impeller: it has a tired shaft seal, and changing it costs a while at the bench; waiting costs the motor.

01 · WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT DOES

Two faces turning, sealed by a film of honey

A mechanical seal is two rings rubbing face to face, one fixed in the rear cover and one turning with the shaft, in ceramic and graphite, with a minimal film of liquid between them that seals with hardly any friction; a stainless spring keeps them pressed and the NBR elastomer acts as static seal. It is mounted between the rear cover and the shaft, at position 9 in the Minor’s parts list, and its job is twofold: that honey does not pass towards the motor and that air does not get in there.

02 · WHEN TO CHANGE IT

Dripping at the back and loss of prime

The symptoms are two, and they come together: honey dripping down the motor body and a pump slowly losing suction although the motor turns the same, because air gets in through the worn seal. Crystallised honey inside and harsh washing shorten it. Change it at the first sign: if honey reaches the motor housing, the repair costs many times this part. With the pump stopped and unpressurised, removing the rear cover is enough; the whole pump need not be opened. If it loses flow without dripping, the part is the impeller (2894).

03 · WHICH PUMP IT FITS

Liverani Minor, and position 8 of the Lega

It is the seal of the Liverani Minor 40 sold by the house (80). The same part sits at position 8 in the parts list of Lega’s vane pump, widespread among beekeepers, although we do not sell that pump. NBR is compatible with honey and syrups; for essential oils or solvents, ask us before fitting it.
