Details of Paradise® poly roof for 10F beehives

Roof in food-grade expanded polystyrene of over 100 kg/m³, from the BeeBox system by Paradise Honey: flat on top and flat underneath.

The two flat faces are not styling: the top one lets you stack hives on a pallet, and the bottom one removes the feeding cavity. That second point needs thinking about before you buy.

01 · FLAT ON TOP

The roof for whoever moves hives

The original model has raised ribs; this one is completely smooth on top, and that difference is what lets you stack hives one on another on the pallet without wedges or battens. Length and width match the hive body exactly, so the load stands square. If you migrate or move hives by lorry, that is the whole reason to choose it.

02 · FLAT UNDERNEATH

Less brace comb, and a feeding decision

Inside it is smooth as well: it has no feeding cavity like the standard model. That leaves 8-10 mm between the top bars and the roof — exactly the bee space — with two good consequences: the colony builds less brace comb up there and seals the roof with very little wax. And one to keep in mind: there is no room for a bag feeder over the frames, so if you feed that way you need a top feeder.

03 · THE MATERIAL

EPS over 100 kg/m³, tested at the extremes

It is extra-hardened expanded polystyrene of food grade, denser than 100 kg/m³ — not the white foam of packaging. Paradise Honey makes it in Finland and their material is used from Arctic Russia to Australia, through swings of ±50 °C. Painted and looked after, a roof like this lasts decades. And it insulates: in summer it is what keeps the roof from turning into a hotplate.

04 · THE PAINT

Outside only, and not just any

Polystyrene neither rots nor takes up damp, but the sun does attack it: the coat of paint is not cosmetic, it is what makes the roof last. Use water-based exterior paint or polyurethane, preferably with UV protection. What you must not use is enamel or anything with solvent, and paint the outside only.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It measures 55 × 46 cm and stands 5.5 cm high, to the size of the BeeBox body. Being flat inside, it takes no feed bag over the frames.

✓ FITSBeeBox system hives, and pallet stacking for migration.
✕ DOESN'T FITIf you feed with a bag over the frames: there is no room.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDTop feeder, inner cover or paint.
