01 · THE 1 KG BAG

The right ration, and you see who eats

The 1 kg bag is the ration you give whole without cutting anything, and that counts most in nuclei and weak colonies, where a 2.5 kg bag sits half-eaten for months. It is also the format that lets you see who eats and who does not: one bag per hive, and at the next visit the consumption tells you which colony is short. Twelve bags per box, twelve kilos.

02 · WHY IT SOMETIMES GOES HARD

A fondant dries out if you open it too much or leave it away from the cluster

It is the complaint that comes up now and then, and it has an explanation: fondant does not harden from cold, it hardens because it loses moisture. Two causes, both avoidable. One, opening the wrapper too much: cut just enough and leave the plastic on, which is what stops it drying. Two, placing it away from where the bees are: in winter the colony only works what it can warm, so the bag goes against the cluster, over the frames they are sitting on and not off in a corner.

03 · ENERGY, NOT PROTEIN

It covers carbohydrates; if pollen is short, that is another problem

Apifonda provides carbohydrates: energy for warmth, activity and maintenance when honey stores are tight. What it does not do is cover a pollen shortfall — that calls for a protein patty or a substitute, and those are different products. It fits pre-wintering, coming out of winter, drought, hornet pressure or long gaps between flows: the moments when you open up and see little honey in the top bars.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

The pallet is 64 boxes of 12 kg: 768 kg and 768 one-kilo bags, a whole ration for each of 768 hives. That is the point of this palletisation against the 2.5 kg one: per-hive control at commercial scale. And the standing rule: do not feed during a flow if you are going to harvest that honey for sale.
