01 · THE GUARD IS THE DIFFERENCE

And what it does not change

The guard surrounds the body and leaves an air gap: your hand does not touch the metal, and the smoker does not scorch hive woodwork if you rest it against it.

What it does not change is the physics: the body, and above all the spout, are still hot. The guard reduces contact, not temperature. And lit, it does not go in the car or on anything that burns.

02 · THE GRATE UNDERNEATH

Why some smokers go out

The perforated inner grate is the part that decides whether the smoker lasts the round of the apiary. It lifts the fuel off the floor and lets air in from below.

Without that gap the embers settle into their own ash, no air passes and the smoker dies in ten minutes. It is the failure people blame on the fuel and it is almost always this.

03 · THE BELLOWS IS THE WEAR PART

Wood and leather

The bellows is what tires before the metal: the leather always works at the same fold and cracks over the years. It is flame-retardant leather, but sun and heat dry it out just the same.

Store it in the shade and not compressed. A bellows that no longer pushes air is a smoker that does not work, however good the body looks.

04 · CLEANING THE SPOUT

The real reason it stops smoking

As it burns, the fuel leaves tar that condenses on the cold part — the spout. As it narrows, the smoke stops coming out even with plenty of embers inside.

Scrape it from time to time or burn it out with the smoker empty. The hook is for hanging it while it cools, which is when you never know where to put it.
