Details of Variable-speed motor for honey extractors

Motorising a manual extractor is the quickest, most affordable way to gain capacity without changing machine. This variable-speed drive replaces hand-cranking with a motor that starts up gradually and holds a steady speed, so you spin more frames with less effort and treat the comb more gently. Available in four power ratings, from 80 to 250 W, to suit the size of your extractor and the honey you work.

⚙️ Variable speed and reversible rotation from a single lever

A single lever sets both the speed and the direction of rotation: push it one way for clockwise, the other to reverse. Starting slowly and building up gradually is what keeps fresh comb and unbalanced frames from breaking, especially in the first seconds of each load. To stop, return the lever to zero before switching off; never stop the motor by slamming it into reverse.

🔧 Direct coupling, no pulleys or belts

The drive runs straight from the motor shaft to the cage shaft, with no pulleys, belts or intermediate gears to slip or re-tension every season. The result is a cleaner, lower-maintenance setup that fits the cross bars of most manual extractors on the market.

🍯 Four power ratings, one for every extractor

Choose the power to match the drum diameter, the load of frames and the density of the honey:

  • 80 W — small extractors of two to three frames; ideal for lighter frames such as supers or Langstroth.
  • 110 W — medium extractors of three to six frames; suitable for all frame types (National, Commercial, Langstroth).
  • 180 W — extra torque for medium-to-large extractors: heavy, well-filled frames or mid-size radial drums, where 110 W starts to fall short.
  • 250 W — the most powerful in the range, for the largest manual extractors and wider radial drums, or for anyone running many loads back to back who wants ample torque and steady running.

If you are unsure between two ratings, go for the higher one: a motor with torque to spare runs more comfortably and lasts better than one working at its limit.

🏗️ How to motorise your extractor, piece by piece

Motorising a manual extractor means adding a few parts, each in its own size: a coupling sleeve that joins the motor shaft to the cage shaft, a mounting plate that fixes the motor to the central bar, and —if the original bar flexes— a sturdy cross bar that can take the motor's torque. For smooth running, the play between the motor and cage shafts should stay under 0.6 mm: if it labours, loosen the plate, re-centre and retighten. Each accessory's page explains how to pick its size.

⚠️ What you need besides the motor

The coupling sleeve and mounting plate are not included and are essential to motorise; you'll find them under accessories, each with its own sizing guide. Before ordering, check your cage shaft diameter and the hole spacing on your bar.
