01 · WHAT IT IS

The concentrate, not the feed

It is not a feed on its own: it is the concentrate you add to sugar and water. What it brings is already-hydrolysed protein — broken into free amino acids, essential and non-essential, so the bee spends no enzymes splitting it — along with vitamins, minerals and calcium pantothenate. Its place is early-spring stimulation and hives arriving short on honey and pollen stores.

02 · HOW TO MAKE IT UP

One litre, 36 kg of sugar and 24 of water

For each litre of concentrate, make up a syrup with 36 kg of sugar and 24 litres of water, roughly 60 kg of finished feed. The limit not to cross: never heat the dilution above 40 °C. Above that the amino acids and vitamins start to degrade — precisely what you are paying for — and heat on sugar is what forms HMF.

03 · HOW TO FEED IT

Feeder or bag over the frames

The syrup can go in a feeder or, if you would rather not open the hive fully, in plastic bags of about one kilo: laid over the central frames, above the brood or the cluster, with a cut or a few holes made in the top. The bag acts as the reservoir and there is no feeder to clean afterwards.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Between the two sizes the arithmetic is simple: the 1-litre makes 60 kg of syrup and the 5-litre 300 kg. Keep it somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. And the usual rule: do not feed during the flow if you intend to harvest that honey for sale.
