01 · WHAT IT IS FOR: MELTING OFF-GRID

Field sheds and apiary sites

An electric wax melter needs a socket. This one runs on wood, so wax can be rendered in a field shed, at the apiary site or anywhere with no installation.

The 18-litre tank gives two or three hours of continuous work per fill, and the firebox takes logs up to 50 cm, so you are not feeding it constantly. Reckon on about 20 minutes from lighting until steam starts coming out.

02 · THE TWO VALVES

0.4 and 1.5 bar, and they stay untouched

It carries two pressure relief valves, at 0.4 and 1.5 bar. That is what turns a tank with a fire under it into equipment you can work with calmly.

The rule is short: a safety valve is never blocked, never weighted and never tampered with, for any reason. If one drips or hisses continuously, put the fire out and check it — do not tighten it.

03 · THE WATER AND THE WOOD

Watch the level, and burn dry wood

What needs watching through the day is the water level. If the tank runs dry with the fire lit, the vessel overheats and no valve fixes that. Top it up before it reaches the limit, not once it is already low.

And the wood: dry. Damp wood smokes, gives less heat and stretches those twenty minutes of warm-up as far as it likes.

04 · WHAT IT CONNECTS TO

Sealing lid and hose

It connects to the melter or boiler with the heat-resistant hose supplied, and the sealing lid closes the assembly so steam is not lost at the joints.

Before ordering, tell us what equipment you have: not every wax melter has a steam inlet, and some generate their own from a water jacket. That the lid seals onto your boiler is the thing to verify.

05 · THE WAX COMES OUT DARKER

Steam goes past 100 °C

At working pressures the steam runs above 100 °C, and beeswax starts to darken above roughly 85 °C. As with any steam melter, the wax that comes out is darker than from a solar one.

In exchange it renders real volume and the heat sterilises what passes through it, which matters when recovering old equipment. For pale candle wax, the solar melter is still the way.

Check your melter takes external steam, and where you will light a fire: this does not go in a closed workshop with no flue.
